A brief Histoy of Belfast, know before you go!
Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland and its largest city. Its history as a settlement goes all the way back to the Bronze age, but its status as a major urban centre only dates back dates to the eighteenth century. There is still eveidence of the early Iron Age hill forts visible today . In the early part of the 17th century Belfast was settled by English and Scottish settlers by Sir Arthur Chichester to colonise and help remove the Irish Catholics. The Irish rebelled in 1641after a bad famine and attacked the Protestants settlers. A Scottish army arrived to quell the problems and many of the soldiers settled in Ireland after the war. Belfast is famous for its shipbuilding and this is where the Titanic was built. In 1920 Belfast was declared the Capital of Northern Ireland and The Irish Free State was created.
